Islam -- Islamic Fundamentalism Feared, Misunderstood

After reading this whole article, it seems like Media is the only reason due to which the Western world misinterprets Islam. Does it mean, in the times when Media was not that strong, Western world didn't despise and misunderstood Islam, the way it does today?
