Brilliant Bangladesh stuns India, defeats India despite Sachin's ton.
Brilliant Bangladesh stuns India, defeats India despite Sachin's ton.
Mirpur: It was a bitter-sweet symphony at the Shere-Bangla stadium on Friday as despite a valiant century from Sachin Tendulkar - his 100th international ton - Bangladesh orchestrated a scintillating fightback to chase the target of 290 with 4 balls and 5 wickets to spare.
The Indian innings after being put in to bat had a century and two fifties (Virat Kohli's 66 and Suresh Raina's 51). The target looked daunting on a rather slow track but opener Tamim Iqbal (70) and Jahurul Islam (53) gave the hosts a perfect launchpad.
Praveen Kumar had struck early but his efforts came to naught as Iqbal and Islam anchored themselves in. The rate of scoring was not phenomenal by ODI standards but the spectators did not lose heart.
Despite the eventual loss of both batsmen to Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja, Bangladesh kept the pressure up with two more fighting knocks. Shakib-al-Hasan (49) and Nasir Hossain (54) cut open to propel their team and the match assumed tense overtones.
Irfan Pathan was whacked for two sixes in the 48th over and the match was all but over. The match was won from here on, with full points as Mushfiqur Rahim thrashed Praveen beyond the ropes in the 49th over. Hossain was dismissed by Kumar but the match was eventually sealed in 49.2 overs.
