1. why does it not hurt when we cut our nails ?
Answer:-Nails are made of a tough protein called keratin and are produced from living skin cells in the fingers and toes. But they do not have nerve endings and pain receptors like the rest of our body. So the pain sensation does not reach our brain and we do not feel pain when they are cut.

Quote:
2. why does a clock loose time in summer ?
Answer:-In summer due to high temperature the length of pendulum increases so that it's time period also increases, hence clocks loses time in summer.

Quote:
3. why a siphon cannot work in vacuum ?
Answer:-A siphon works due to the atmospheric pressure and force of cohesion among the water molecules, so it does not works in vacuum.

5. explain why moisture gathers on the outside of a glass tumbler ?
Answer:-the water vaporous present in air get cooled and appear as droplets of water on coming in contact with the cold surface of the glass tumbler.

Quote:
6. what is aerodynamics?
Answer:-It is defined as "the branch of mechanics that deals with the motion of gases especially air and their effects on bodies in the flow." It includes the effects of pressure and air resistance. It is used often for airplanes and rockets, but also for automobiles, where reducing the air friction can improve performance and fuel efficiency.

Quote:
7. why are cloudy nights generally warm ?
Answer:-Because at night Earth radiate infra-red radiation (heat) back into space. When there is cloud cover, the clouds act like a blanket. It prevent much of the warm air from leaving the atmosphere and trap the heat close to the ground just like a blanket traps heat close to our body.

Quote:
8. why is rain water soft but river water hard ?
Answer:-Rainwater is soft water because content calcium or magnesium or iron ions are not dissolved in it and its purified water while river water contains a large amount of minerals, particularly calcium, magnesium, and irons that makes it hard.

Quote:
9. why a small space is left at the joint between two rails ?
Answer: - All materials expand when heated and contract when cooled, small space is left to allow room for the rails to expand due to the rise in atmospheric temperature as well as the friction caused by running of train. The expansion due to heating is significant, and unless space is provided for expansion of rails, the rails will bend to accommodate the increased length. This will make the railway unfit for running of trains.

Quote:
11. at what speed does the earth revolve round the sun ?
Answer:-The Earth orbits, on average, 93 million miles (149,600,000 km) from the Sun (this distance is defined as one Astronomical Unit (AU)), taking one year to complete an orbit. The Earth revolves around the Sun at a speed of about 18.5 miles/sec (30 km/sec).

Quote:
12. what is mirage ?
Answer:-Mirage is an illusion observed in deserts or on roads in summer season where inverted images of distant objects are formed as there would have been water in the desert or on the road. This phenomenon is due to total internal reflection of light and refraction of light.
