Corruption in Pakistan

Corruption in Pakistan, apart from other social problems, is the major challenge confronting Pakistan. It has spread like cancer in the nook and corner of our country. Gone are the days when people consider this an evil. Today, almost everyone is directly or indirectly infected by this. Corruption, is a worldwide phenomenan, no doubt. Even the developed countries of the world are suffering from this disease. However, in Pakistan, the situation is quite grim. It seems that corrupt practices have become the norms of society. The most affected, however, is the poor section of the society. The culture of corruption directly or indirectly affect the weaker section of society. Besides, corruption on such a wider scale has brought bad name to the country. While the causes of this disease such as lack of good governance, political instability, inefficiency on the part of ruling elite and poverty are known, the government seems non-serious to combat this monster. Candidly speaking, to end this scourage is not impossible task. Serious and feasible efforts on the part of government are required to bring some fascinating results. The first step in this regard should be the overhauling of entire system. System can be overhauled provided all the major organs of the government made elimination of corruption as their agenda. Secondly, ulemas should come forward as they enjoy prestigous position in the society. Besides, the anti-corruption agencies should be made powerful enough to act transparently. All this, however, depends on government’s seriousness and interest for the elimination of this disease.

Corruption has become a dilemma for Pakistan. It ranks 6th in the list of countries considered to be most corrupt. There are a number of reasons responsible for penetration of this monster in the society. To begin with, Lack of good governance is the major cause. The major organs of the government are at dagger drawn with one another over trivial issues. They have ignored the real issues particularly corruption. Under this scenario, the virus of corruption is spreading with a massive speed.

Secondly, the anti-corruption agencies particularly the national accountability bureau, are highly inefficient. These agencies have become puppets in the hands of the mighty ruling elite. The performance of anti-corruption agencies is minimal where the feudal mighty class is concerned which has usurped the larger portion the country’s resources through illegal means.

Besides the inefficient anti-corruption agencies, the role of judiciary in bringing the corrupt monsters to book, is not encouraging. Except for a few cases, there is hardly anything worthy of mention. This attitude on the pary of the judiciary has encouraged all those who are indulged in malpractices to act with impunity.

Last but not least, salaries in both the private and public sectors are very low. The low structure of salaries have compelled even the honest people to indulge in malpractices. Average salararies,for instance, ranging from 6000 to 8000. This is a meagre amount and not enough to fulfill the basic necessities of life.Having no other alternative,people resort to illegal practices.

Corruption on such a wide scale has posed serious challenges to the country. Broadly speaking, it has corrosive effects on society. Such malpractices are detrimental to the very foundations of the society. Among the dire impacts of this disease, poverty is on the top. Corruption, no doubt, breeds poverty. As according to an estimate billions of rupees are taken away by corrupt monsters every year. As a result, heavy taxes are imposed on the poor and depressed masses which affect them greatly.

Besides poverty, unemployment increases. In fact, jobs are being sold and not given on merit. Poverty in combination with unemployment further adds fuel to the fire. Unemployed youth remain highly prone to several social ills such as terrorism and extremism. Moreover, the suicides ratio among the unemployed people is very high as compared to others.

Similarly, rampant corruption brings political instability. The last decade of the previous century in Pakistan’s history is the case in point. Most of the governments during 1990’s dissolved on the charges of corruption which ultimately paved way for military intervention.

Military intervention has been very rampant in Pakistan. Four major military coups have been occurred so far which gave serious blow to the democratic institutions. Military intervenes because the political leadership, ignore the real issues concerning the masses, remain indulge in corrupt practices. Taking advantage of this, military interferes in the name of eliminating the menace of corruption from the country.

The impact of corrupt practices on the society is very great. It has bred numberless other problems in its wake. The government, however, seems impotent to combat this monster. All the efforts which the government has made for its eradication have met with complete failure.

Following steps, however, if taken can help resolve this grave problem. The first step in this regard should be the election of honest and upright people. Unfortunately, in Pakistan the illiterate masses without knowing the consequences, sell their votes to corrupt people. These people once take the reigns of government in their hands, completely ignore the miseries of masses and make every effort to double their money which they have spent during elections. So, the first responsibility falls on the shoulders of the masses to cast their votes to competent and trustworthy people.

Besides casting votes to competent and honest leaders, there must be a clear check and balance system. This type of system exists in all the developed countries particularly in United States.

In addition to this, the anti corruption agencies should be empowered to act transparently. Politicians should not subjugate them rather they should be free. More importantly, persons who are known for their honesty and competency should be inducted there.

In a nutshell, there is no denying the fact that corruption has become a dire problem for the country. Unless this menace is eliminated, progress in any field is hardly possible. It is therefore high time for the government to deal this issue with iron hand. The elimination of corruption, no doubt, will set our country on the track of development.
