Questions are asked, so subject is followed by ask+object+interrogative etc.
so we have seen that interrogative form in the first sentence changes into affirmative one in the second, we also omit the question mark in reporting a question.
If introductory verb is say in Direct speech, we change it into a verb of inquiry i-e ask, inquire, wonder etc.


If there is no interrogative word used in Direct speech, we use If or Whether

He said, "you are his son".Direct speech
He asked if/whether i was his son. Indirect speech

I said, "What is the price of that book"?
Ali said, "He is the man we met last week"?
Api said, "Why do you tease me BIlal"?
He asked me who had done that damage.
i asked the price of that book.

api asked Bilal why did he tease her.
