General expression of wishing i-e i wanted to become a doctor but i couldn't.
Rule for changing narration of subjunctives:
Subjunctives in Direct speech remain unchanged in Reported speech when followed by either of aforementioned structures.
Ali said, "i wish i could enjoy the weather outside". Direct speech
Ali said/wished that he could enjoy the weather outside. Indirect speech
"I would rather have appeared for CSS", he said. Direct speech
He said that he would rather have appeared for CSS. Indirect speech
They said. "it is high time they took the decision". Direct speech
They said that it was high time they took the decision. Indirect speech
He said, "You had better leave the place". Direct speech
He advised to me that i had better leave the place. Indirect speech
Note that verb does change but the aforementioned structures after subjunctive do not.
