LAHORE – Warning the ruling coalition of another long march, PTI Chairman, Imran Khan on Tuesday demanded immediate resignation of President Asif Ali Zardari and formation of consensus-based caretaker setup. Imran, addressing a press conference, put forward a seven-point agenda to the government for steering the country out of the chaotic situation. He also asked his party workers to be ready for his call to launch a tsunami march if the ruling alliance failed to meet his demand of consensus-based interim setup. He said, “I don’t expect fair and free elections in the presence of P
resident Zardari, so he should resign for the sake of transparent and fair polls.” The PTI chief also demanded immediate announcement of schedule for the next elections and reconstitution of the Election Commission. He said while forming an interim setup, the two parties, PPP and PML-N, should take all the political forces on board. He said all the accused should be arrested, implementing the Supreme Court decision. He also demanded arrest of the culprits involved in the Quetta carnage and award of exemplary punishment to them. Imran said though the PTI had trust in the chief election commissioner, the two ruling parties at Centre and in the Punjab used public funds for their campaign in the recently held by-polls. He added one party was distributing laptops, while the other was using Benazir Income Support Programme, at the cost of the public funds, to advance their pre-electoral drive. Imran alleged Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had used Rs 35 billion in his constituency out of the public kitty, demanding a probe into it. He said t
he PTI wanted setting up of a neutral caretaker setup, according to the spirit of the 1973 Constitution. He said the ruling coalition should immediately announce schedule for the next polls in order to put an end to the ongoing uncertainty. The PTI chairman urged Zardari to resign as it was feared that he would attempt to steal the next polls by using huge funds. Responding to a query, Imran said had Dr Qadri consulted PTI, he would have joined the Minhaj chief for bringing a change in the country. He, however, said the PTI believed in change through vote and on-time holding of the next general elections. Imran maintained the PTI would not support any extra-constitutional act and believed in the implementation and supremacy of the Constitution. Responding to another question, Imran claimed Dr Qadri’s march had exposed all deals between PPP and PML-N. He warned the government of serious repercussions if it used force against the peaceful marchers. PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, President Javed Hashmi and other senior leaders were also present on this occasion.
