Well, I am not the authority over the subject, but in the light of my experience and inference I would say that one should select a topic about which one might have a relatively deeper insight/philosophy and somewhat innovative ideas, in case if the topics are very generalized. Rest, grabing marks in essay also depends upon presentation(written expression I mean here)to a greater extent.
