Hi
This is in response to your query as follows:

1- kindness is lost upon an ungrateful man: Before getting clear the meaning just consider the following points:
"An ungrateful man" is the one who never thanks to Allah or anyone for any favor he gets because of his hubris, pride etc."
"Kindness" is to be sympathetic, considerate, humane, forgiving or any favor etc.
"Lost upon" means not to pay heed, understand, or consider.

Therefore, here in the passage it means that "An unappreciative person or a thankless person would never reciprocate your good favors in kind."

2- keep good company and be one of the number: "It means that you should not only crave for good company but also be the one to fulfill the requirement of others."
OR
"If you expect other to be good with you then you should also behave what you expect from others"

I also request you to please come on the thread "COMPREHENSIVE NOTE WRITING PRACTICE FOR 2008" and participate there, in order to share your knowledge and skill or learn from others. Thanks
