Introduction
THE importance of English as a tool of communication in education is intimately linked to its international status. We need this language in our education for various reasons. Foremost among them are the facts that it is being spoken in every nook and corner of the world; and that it is a language of science and technology. If we are to understand the relationship of English with our education, it is but imperative to peep that part of our history when British were our undisputed masters. Having established their rule over whole of the subcontinent, they declared English as an official language. Then few of the great Muslim leaders realized that the Muslims could not uplift their social status unless they accepted to learn English and modern education. Since then, anyone who intends to acquire modern education should have command our this language. Admittedly, we cannot dub English only as an unwanted product of past, but there are also few genuine reasons to retain it as a medium of education. This is a language of science and technology; a language of international status and the medium of communication at all levels across the world. Nevertheless, its blind use as a medium in our education has few repercussions. Analysis shows that it creates a bilingual dilemma, undermines the importance of our national language, less productive in imparting essential knowledge and creates a divide in society. If these all facts are kept in mind and few bold steps are taken, we can possibly uplift the status of Urdu in education. This is not to say that we should eradicate English altogether from our curricula. But it should be retained as a supplementary language. Hopefully, this will make us self-sufficient and plug many of pitfalls in our education system.
Good work. Keep it up.May Allah succeed us all. Ameen.
