ECP directives on Civility
The Frontier Post

It is a worldwide phenomenon that candidates are given time for proper canvassing during the Elections. In countries like USA where an ideal form of democracy exists, it is a common practice that candidates often have debate on the topics of national importance with a focus on their policies to address these affairs when they are elected. This is the most appreciated way and opprotunity for candidate to show his superiority on his counterpart.
While in Pakistan the situation is different. Politicians are taking their rivals firmly. Personal attacks in speeches are common. Like Imran Khan has targeted the private life of Sharif Brothers in his Bhawalpur address. This is against the spirit of democracy. Also for a politician, who is seeking the consistency and practice of morality in politics, this is not good. Indeed democracy demands the fair and square handling of the affairs without indulging in useless discussions. Democracy is to live and let the other live. Democracy is to show excellence not to fade other. Criticism in democracy should not cross the limits of ethics.
The Election Commission’s directives, in this context, are the guideline for politicians to refrain from the activities which are against the spirit of democracy. These are common principles and codes of civility which should be followed while chasing the goal of strengthening the democracy in country. Politician should concentrate on the issues of national importance and their solution instead of crossing swords with each other in personal spheres, Because, this is important for democracy and nation in Pakistan.
