their are two interpretations.
1- According to sufi islam Yes, Prophet is alive, He is Noor and listen to us, He reply to our sallam. there are various hadess and quotations from Holy Quran presented as a proof by proponents of sufi islam. eg in Quran Allah says that every person deeds are presented to His prophet and they are pleased to know about good deeds etc. similarly saying darood-o-sallam and darood-e-taj must and can not be for a deceased soul. so Prophet is alive, in alam-e-barzakh (the place in heaven where soul rests after physical death in this world ) , but there is ambiguity where Prophet is alive in His physical form or only His soul.

2- According to orthodox islam, Prophet is Human like others, He is not Noor. He is not alive and His soul rests with other souls in Alam-e-berzakh. He will be brought back to life like all other souls when Hazrat Israfeel blow the whistle.
