I think verse 33:56 is one of the most misunderstood verse in the Quran. To fully understand the word 'solluu', 'sollee', 'sollawat', let's look at the verses that uses the root word we have just mentioned;
33:43-'Allah together with His angels [I]YUSOLLEE[I] to the believers...'
9:103-'(O Muhammad) take sadaqah from part of their wealth, and SOLLEE to them. For verily your SOLLAWAT to them will be a source of security to them..'
33:56-'Verily Allah and His angels YUSOLLUU to nabi. O you who believe, SOLLUU to him..'

In general, the words solluu, sollee, sollawat can means 'to bless', 'to pray', 'to give support'. The only and most consistent in meaning for all the three verses above, could only means 'to give support' or 'to bless by giving support'. But we've taken the whole word out of context. By translating the word to mean 'to bless by meditating' or 'to make selawat day and night'. This translation is wrong for the following reasons:
1.The meaning is not consistent with all three verses above, and contradict with either two of the verses
2.'to bless by meditating day and night' should be purely and solely to God. Meditation belongs to God.
33:41-42 -'O you who believe, remember Allah continuosly, and praise to Him day and night..'

Asked what is it, told; it is narrated that question was asked by the sahaba karam r.a from AnhAzrat PBUH ayat 43 and 56 of Surah Ahzaab were revealed, which was replied:

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.588 Narrated by Abu Humaid As Saidi
The companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah! How shall we (ask Allah to) send blessings on you?" The Messenger of Allah (saws) replied, "Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on his wives and on his offspring, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham's family; and send Your Blessings on Muhammad and on his offspring, as You sent Your Blessings on Abraham's family, for You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious."

Abu Mas'ud Al-Ansari reported the following account from Bashir ibn Sa'd: "I asked Prophet (saws), 'O Messenger of Allah, Allah has commanded us to "sal-ley" (invoke blessings) upon you. How should we do it?' The Messenger of Allah (saws) remained silent until we wished we had not asked him. Then he told us to say: 'Allahumma salli 'ala muhammadin wa 'ala ali muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala ali ibrahima, wa barik 'ala muhammadin wa 'ala ali muhammadin kama barakta 'ala ibrahima wa 'ala ali ibrahima fil 'alamin, innaka hammidum majeed.'

(O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim, and give baraka to Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You gave baraka to the family of Ibrahim, in all the worlds. You are worthy of Praise and Most Glorious)."

(Narrated by Muslim)

In light of these two ahadithe mubarika, meaning of these ayate karim is evident.

Peace be upon all, amin.
