IT is used as a pronoun in following conditions:

For non living things: It is my bicycle.

For describing weather conditions: It is very hot today/ It will get colder/ It is about to rain.

For living things the gender of which is unknown: It does not seem to be your cat, its colour is black while yours is white.

For human beings/Children the gender of whom is not determined: It is Maria's baby, she loves it so much.

For children we don't use it when there is a clue of the gender, then we use the pronoun accordingly: Maria has named her baby Saira, she is a cute baby. (Here Saira is always the name of a girl)
