there are many tests by which a gentlemen may be know,but there is one that never fails . how does he exercise power over those subordinate on him ?
how does he conduct himself towards women and children?
how does the officer treat his men,the employer his servants,the master his pupils,and the man in every station ,those who are weaker then himself?
the discretion ,forbearance,and kindliness,with which power in such cases is used,may indeed be retarded as crucial test of a gentle-manly character .
he who bullies those who are not in position to resist,may be a snob but he can not be a gentlemen .he who tyrannises over the week and the helpless,may be a coward but no true man .
strength and consciousness of strength in a light hatred man innards a nobleness to his character . but he will be most careful when he used it ;for it is excellent to have a giant's.gentility is indeed the test of gentlemen -liness. A consideration of the feelings of others of his inferiors and dependents as well as his equals and respect for their self respect will pervade the true gentle men's whole conduct.
