Even if the news of the number of applicants is not from a reliable source or hearsay, still the number of candidates appearing in 2014 will be more than previous years. The increase in applications might be in response to two events which went side by side.
Many people didn't knew about the CSS exam or just heard a little about it and paid no attention. "Zindagi Gulzaar Hai" holding a large scale audience created a charm of civil service, and proved to be a tool of awareness about the exam and about the 'shortcut by hard work' in changing status.
When people started to seek information, it appeared to them the cancellation of the screening test but which will be in practice from next year onwards. Many students do not have mathematics background and even those who have, a large number of them avoid mathematics. Mathematics in the screening test and double preparation hastened many to try luck this year.
I doubt about the opinions of many members who holds the view that the competition more or less will be between the same number of candidates as before. Many who have appeared or appear in CSS exams make up their mind suddenly and limit themselves to books; only few plan long before. So, my advise would be to take it as a threat to your allocation
and instead of relying on others to not to appear and prepare, amplify your own preparation.
