Withdrawal of US (NATO) troops
The approaching Afghan endgame is an important factor in India's calculus to talk to Islamabad out of the concern not to be marginalized from a diplomatic process that may eventually give Pakistan a key role in Afghan-led and US-backed reconciliation efforts with the Taliban. Dialogue also serves as a means to soften Islamabad's stance on an Indian role in post-war Afghanistan.

2nd part...
America, for its part, needs Pakistan's help in Afghanistan, where the superpower is still struggling with the Taliban. America does not want anything to distract Pakistan from the military campaign it is waging against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. In response to a military threat from India, Pakistan's forces would be whisked away to the Eastern front. This would remove the anvil on which America hopes to hammer Taliban and Al Qaeda. About three-quarters of the food, fuel and other provisions that supply American troops pass through Pakistan.
