Default Dependent And Independent variable

By performing a simple experiment , a student determined that doing jumping jacks for one minute causes a person's heart rate to increase. The student wants to perform a new experiment to see if running in place for one minute will also increase a person's heart rate.

a) What is a valid hypothesis for the new experiment?

b) What is the dependent variable for the new experiment?

c) What is the independent variable for the new experiment?

Ans##

a. From previous experiments, it can be seen that doing jumping jacks results in a higher heartbeat rate. Thus, running for one minute, as well, will cause the heartbeat to increase.

b. Dependent variable is the heartbeat rate (because the rate depends on what you do)

C. Independent variable is the running itself (because it determines the heartbeat)

D. If they asked for a control variable, that would be the time and the conditions.
