Syria is governed by Shia subgroup Alawite and the insurgents are Sunnis. ISIS is also a Sunni organization. USA was ready to attack Syria but due to diplomatic efforts of Russia this was averted. The West says that the alternative of Bashar Al Assad is even worse than him. It has nothing to do with secterianism
