Both are acceptable as long as you write the correct reference i.e. Verse (Ayah) No., Chapter No. AND/OR Name of the Surah. In case of Hadith, the exact reference including the name of the Narrator and Hadith No. in the book from which it is quoted.

Please guide.
If you studied Islamiat Compulsory / Islamic Studies during any of your school / college / university education, then you already have the background. In Pakistan, almost 99% of the people would have studied it at least for once during their academic years. Anyhow, the preparation is not much difficult. Simply follow the study plan given in the first post, collect material on the topics mentioned therein, either from the book or online sources and start reading it. That's it.

Good Luck!
