Hey,
I'd recommend "The Sociology of Gender," by Mary Holmes. It's downloadable from bookzz.org and available on google books. It is pretty easy to understand and gives a good insight into what gender studies is about. Plus, the author explains the theories in a way that one with no background in the subject can understand.
However, this book doesn't cover the entire syllabus. But, it'll explain the basics of the subject.
