Introduction:

What constitutes a luxury in the past becomes a necessity of today.

[A] Difference Between A Luxury And A Necessity:

(i) Things having high costs and less availability, whose absence does not affect people negatively but whose presence brings pleasure, are labelled as luxuries.

(ii) Things that are essential for proper functioning of people are termed as necessities.

[B] How Luxuries Become Necessities Over Time:

1- Human beings are naturally inclined to adopt to ease.

2- Standards change with time and luxuries become necessities.

3- Mass production increases availability, decreases costs, and what was previously a luxury becomes a common public commodity and need.

4- With latest scientific advancements, the old become a necessity and the new become a luxury.

5- Parents provide their children with more than their actual needs and ultimately the latter becomes dependent on the luxuries of their predecessors.

6- Inheritance of wealth and knowledge from predecessors makes it easier for people to add more items on their list of necessities.

7- Successors misjudge the hardships of their ancestors and consider luxury of the latter as a necessity for themselves.

8- Repeated and early exposure to anything causes an addiction.

9- Changing scenarios also change meaning of things: peace which once was a luxury has become a necessity in the wake of advancement of nuclear arsenal.

10- The role of Genetics in making the luxury of one generation a necessity for others. ( We can write here: a recent scientific study proved that something luxurious which you like will be accepted in your DNA as okay, and once it passes to your offspring it then takes the shape of a necessity)

11- Ambitions to adopt the way of life of elders transform their luxuries into necessities of the Young ones.

In the past, humans worked for food, shelter and cloth; today, they work for a refrigerator, TV, washing machine and a car. The successors of industrial revolutions have been addicted to the luxuries of the past. Luxuries are the necessities now.
A. Once comfort beyond the level of basic needs was a luxury
1. Electrical appliances were considered luxury items; common man was better off without them
2. The expensive books, news paper, art and dramas were considered the interests of high social class.
3. Food items like wheat, vegetables and meat were sufficient; jams, ketch up, pizzas and soft drinks were luxuries
4. Telephone and mobile phone were first a status symbol, a luxury then a need.

Human nature is designed in such a way that it never set for less than the best, therefore, it always strive to achieve the best state of anything. It knows no return once a state is achieved. This is a one way path that way just goes forward. Keeping this in mind, one can say that what was previously achieved by someone as a result of extraordinary effort or intelligence, has now become the starting point for the person next to come. The person next in line has no choice but to take the struggle one step ahead or else would be eliminated from the race. To keep oneself relevant, not only continuous struggle is required but also it should be kept in mind that there is no place for a person who believe in reinventing the wheel. To be successful, it is required to take that wheel to the next level and then invent something more useful than that and so on. Hence it can be said with utmost authenticity that luxury of predecessor becomes the necessity of the successor.
