Kashmir Issue
Background
Kashmir issue originated right at the time when British Indian territory, Subcontinent, was divided into two; Pakistan and Muslim. Kashmir, an area of 84471 square miles, like other 560 states of the subcontinent was to join either India or Pakistan keeping in consideration the geographical location as well as the desire of people of the state. The state was of Muslim majority (80%) , with Hindu Dogra Raja Hari Singh more inclined towards India, against the will of people of the state. Muslims revolted against his desire to join India and they were supported by Pakistani tribesmen. Finding the situation out of control, Hari Singh resorted to India for military aid and was obliged on condition of signing the instrument of accession in favour of India on 26 Oct, 1946. Hence, a full-fledged war erupted between the two neighbours and Pakistan was succeeded in liberating a portion of the state (now Azad Kashmir) from Indian control. Sensing defeat, India approached UN for ceasefire. United Nation Commission on India and Pakistan, however, spelled in clear language that the future of the valley would be decided through plebiscite. In the meantime, India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire which came into effect on January 1st, 1949.

Kashmir-implications on Pakistan
Pakistan calls Kashmir her jugular vein, her lifeline, and an unfinished agenda of partition. It has geostrategic, economic, and military significance for the country. Giving Kashmir into the lap of India means a compromise on Indian waywardness against accession formula of states and on the threat of dry up of three rivers flowing from Kashmir to Pakistan and thus confronting Pakistan with paucity of water, barren lands, and starvation. Without Kashmir the Silk route to China will be highly endangered and there will be no territorial link with China. Kashmir is also no less important for Pakistan in security perspective.

[B]Kashmir-Implications on India
India asserts that Kashmir is her integral part because Hari Singh has signed the instrument of accession in favour of India. Firstly incorporation of Kashmir helps India to claim the status of secular State, as other than Kashmir it has no state with Muslim majority thus Kashmir provided ideology of Indian secularism. Secondly, geostrategic location of Kashmir provides India a strong strategic military position over Pakistan. Economic importance of Kashmir for India is also obvious. More critically incorporation of Kashmir in Indian union provides all the required grounds to ensure its hegemony in the region.

[B] India’s intransigence
It is a fact that India itself had taken the issue to Unite Nation and now is reluctant to abide by UN’s resolution even after six decades.
In March 1949, UN secretary General appointed Admiral Fleet Chester Nimitz (US) as the plebiscite administrator in Kashmir. Pakistan accepted the arbitration of CW Nimitz but India failed to do so.
Similarly, on March 1950, UN Security Council disbanded UNCIP and appointed Owen Dixon, an Australian Judge, to arrange demilitarization in the valley. Sir Owen Dixon visited India and Pakistan and submitted report in September 1950. But Indian negative attitude could not pave way to solution.
In March 1951, The UN Security Council appointed Graham Frank as UN representative of Kashmir. He visited India and Pakistan and submitted his report in October 1951, suggesting demilitarization. He again visited India and Pakistan but India could not accede to his suggestions.
After these futile efforts Geneva Talks in 1953, Bogra-Nehru talks in 1953, Gunner Jerring proposals in 1957 also fell prey to Indian intransigence and the problem of Kashmir remained unresolved.

Consequences
a) Deterioration of human rights
The decades- long issue of Kashmir if could bring something to people of the valley that is only killings, brutality and deteriorated human rights such as freedom health, education, and justice. Draconian laws by Indian forces have been used to suppress the Kashmiris without fear of accountability. About 100000 Muslims have been killed and 10000 people have gone disappeared in the last two decades. Apart from the right to life and freedom, other rights are also in an abysmal situation.

b) Reason of hostility between India and Pakistan
Kashmir has always been an apple of discord between India and Pakistan. Of the three wars fought between the two neighbours, two were fought over the issue of Kashmir. No move for normalization of relation by any country could prove durable because of this very issue.

c) A Threat to Regional and International Peace
this fact is hard to deny that when individuals and nations are not met with justice they resort to the violent solution of their problems. These freedom fighters of Kashmir can become a threat to international peace and security. While another war between the two nuclear neighbouring states, even for a day, would be enough to jeopardize remaining regional peace and history would replace the names of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Solution
The only suitable and viable solution for this grave issue is to give the people of Kashmir the right of self-determination and plebiscites be carried out under a neutral caretaker government having a consensus of all the three players; people of Kashmir, Pakistan, and India. Furthermore, all the international powers and UN should play their role to pressurize India stop dragging its feet on the matter and be decisive.
Conclusion
More than six decades old Kashmir issue could be perilous for regional as well as international security. If the issue is not taken seriously, human rights will continue being violated, danger of a dreadful nuclear war will continue hovering and last but not the least economies of the two neighbouring countries will continue being surfed in nuclear race instead of being used for the welfare of the masses. So there is a strong need that the solution of Kashmir issue should be given the first and foremost priority and the dream of prosperous Kashmir be materialized.
