Aircraft often have two types of "headlights" for night operations: "taxi lights" help pilots see what's ahead and (somewhat) to the sides for moving to and from the runway, and "landing lights" help pilots see unlit things (such as animals or debris) on the runway during landing. Such lights also help the control tower and planes on the ground see aircraft on final approach, and they can be used in flight to help airplanes see and avoid each other in visual flying conditions.
