It was established in 1983. There are 9 Regional Offices. Honourable Wafaqi Mohtasib enjoys perks and privileges equivalent to Minister, there is also a regular Federal Secretary (BPS-22). It is quasi-judicial, quasi-policing secretariat. More than 90 retired bureaucrats of grade 20-22 equivalent scales are serving the nation through their exceptional experience(CSPs/PMS/PCS/FGO) throughout Pakistan.

Powers/Authority

They resolve complaints and provide relief to the public by carrying out independent investigations into complaints about 'maladministration ' in any Federal Government agency. We work to put things right and share lessons learnt and help improve public services as a result. Our independent complaints handling service is free and open to everyone.
We can also entertain the complaints of Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA).

Areas which are outside the purview of Ombudsman Secretariat:
1. Matters that are Sub-judice
2. Matters relating to External Affairs
3. Matters relating to Defence
4. Service Matters
5. Federal Public Service Commission

There are independent Mohtasibs (Ombudsman) for (i) Tax matters, (ii) Insurance matters concerning private insurance companies, (iii) Banking matters concerning private banks; and (iv) Harassment of women at workplace.
