A job is rather necessary for CSS preparation, not just for financial support but also because of the fact that it keeps you active and fit.
You can manage the hours you should be giving to CSS. A regular 5 hours sitting for 6 months is enough to qualify CSS.

Subject selection is a personal choice. Tick the subjects that attracts you by names. Then, go through their past papers and then finalize the selection.

Success in CSS is a matter of hard work as well as luck. Failing in CSS does not prove you less hardworking or less intelligent. Write as much as you can, be specific in studies and concise in your answers. Its not a hard work, but smart work which is required.
