Sir about the first part of your query I think it should not be some fixed quantity and will vary from question to question.
Regarding the second part I dont think that you need to and most importantly you CANT memorize each n every thing from the text, I dont know about others but what my approach is that note down the important dates, happenings and headings if its a history related text then give it a thorough readings and afterwards you should be able to recall the text by just going through the written headings and important points. Before exam mug up those points and dates.

Hope that helps

Dears, an average candidate can prepare for CSS within three months upto the capability of securing a very good position provided one gets proper guidance and adequate study material. As for as the word count in a twenty marks question is concerned about 600 are generally enough.

I appreciate your will power and determination but the subjects you are going to opt 'll not let you get maximum marks in such a short time, as you need plenty of time to cover the syllabus of Physics only whereas there is so much variety in your subject selection which 'll lead you to focus on 5 different centers of a circle which is obviously possible but difficult in my opinion. Obviously, you are competent enough to achieve this task but in case of CSS exams you don't have to just pass the exam, you need to excel each paper. One paper may destroy the result. So, I suggest you to hit on the right time.

In my opinion you should go for CE-2013. But if you feel, you have ample knowledge to get the top slots then you must go for CE-2012.

Sir in your opening post you asked only senior members thats why I didnt reply as I am a newbie

Well If you ask me I think just make up your mind n dig down, if u start from scratch this september then you need to curtail all other activities like job/studies etc and need to study only for CSS. If that is the case then go ahead its ample time till Jan 2012 (keep Feb for revision only) but if you intend to continue job or studies along with preparation then give it a try in 2013.

I am going to freeze all my other activities with effect from 15 september inshaAllah and will concentrate on preparation only.

I hope its clear now and you are the one to decide!

@shrd brother this is exactly what i mean that if one focus completely on quality and wise and economic use of words, then generally for subjects like Indo-Pak history/sociology/journalism what would be decent length of answer? I am worried so I may not get prey to 'too short' straightforward answers I was accustomed to in a fast paced semester studies. Simply minimum limit I mean. One brother mentioned 600 words but wouldnt it be too lengthy?

Really thankful to all brothers who guided earlier.
