Is there any defined criteria on the basis of which one get the group?

Bur brother,How would i know how many vacancies are available in a particular group?

In addition to above:
YOU being a woman (alas! that doesn't seem to be the case) can get an additional advantage of competing with others in the open merit as well as getting a hand on the 10% women quota seats so that makes chances for the fair sex even fairer!

Bro. the total vacancies for each group are published by the Est. Div. each year. These total vacancies are then subdivided into the respective quotas and made available to the successful candidates for each particular quota. So the number of vacancies you are eligible to 'compete for' would be dependent on the quota that you fall in as determined by your domiciles. Unless, of course you are amongst the toppers and could be allocated to the service irrespective of your domiciles quota but instead through the merit quota seats of 7.5% for each service group.
