The best way to selection of subject in CSS.
1- Go through the complete list of the optional subjects. Tick all subjects your are familiar with and most important factor you are interested.
2- Go through the syllabus , scoring trend and previous papers.
3- Evaluate each aspect of the subject.
4- Try to select overlapping subjects.
The most difficult point in competitive exams is subject selection.
Never select a subject on only basis of scoring trend because in scoring subjects many aspirants failed due to lack of interest and preparation.
A gave you one example that Dr. Qurat Ul Ain CSS Topper 2008 had subjects Indo-Pak History and Urdu literature.
Urdu Literature throughout our academic career consider as the low scoring subject but she told in interview she was interested in Urdu |Literature. Interestingly she had |Medical Background (MBBS).
So you should go through the syllabus and past paper first your interest and secondly scoring trend.
Best of Luck
