Again here quality matter a lot. If one writes a qualitative material,one may pass it. The number of words prescribed by the FPSC is just a guideline. If one writes 2500 words or more,it is a positive sign but more focus should be on quality and relevance. I wrote just 1200 words in 2010 and passed it. A friend of mine,who just wrote 7 pages, passed it and secured score in 50s.

To all juniors:

Yes,people have passed the essay writing less than 2500 words.But it is mentioned in the exam to write an essay of 2500-3500 words.There is a joke.Kuch log chatt se gir k,uuper se kood k bhi bach jatey hey.But that doesn't mean that you start jumping from roof-tops to test it.Do not take risk.If you can't write an essay of 2500 words,you are placing yourself at an unnecessary risk,and frankly,you don't deserve to pass the exam.Come on,its only 2500 words.

Golden Principle:

Do not tempt the examiner to fail you.

I would humbly differ here as it is not a rule of thumb to write precisly the 2500 words on the pages and expecting a safe score.In fact it somtimes negatively impacts the performance of the candidates.instead of focusing on what and how to write(the quality and origionality of ideas) they try to complete the quota of words with cliches and unscruplous details.The focus of attentaion should be the topic(one's ideas revelent to it) and not the quantity of words.And naturally within the allowed timeframe a carefully planned essay exceeds 2000 plus words.In the end it is not the number of words but the ideas and argumnets that fetch us marks....

My Experience:

In CSS 2008, I attempted essay without any preparation and hardly wrote 1500 words. I secured 48 in Essay.
In CSS 2010, Essay was my best attempt because topic was prepared before and wrote about 2500-2700 words. But I failed in Essay.
One of my friends appearing in CSS 2010 attempted only essay paper and according to him paper did not go well at all. He was so dishearted that he didn't appear in other papers thinking that he could not pass essay. He wrote more than 2500 words but he told me that he just filled sheets. He himself didn't know what he was writing... and he passed the essay with 42 marks . So you never know what is going on in examiner's mind while checking paper!
