Terrible Time Management

The precis and composition paper was relatively easy this year, however, I ran out of time before I could finish my paper and couldn't attempt the final question, the one with the Urdu translation, although in my defense, I'm not that good at Urdu and probably wouldn't have attempted it that well. And apart from that, I also missed a few homophone question (I could only attempt 2 parts and a half of another one). I blame my terrible time management, as I somehow ended up giving an hour to precis. The rest of my paper went good though.

I wasn't that content when I came out of the examination hall. But is there any chance that even with all these blunders I'll pass this one? Has anyone else had the same issue, this year or in previous attempts?

hafsa ali asghar Friday, February 16, 2018 03:10 PM

yes, i left 13 marks paper. dont know what will happen
yes, i left 13 marks paper. dont know what will happen
Me too. I'm hoping it won't affect the overall marking much. How did the rest of your paper go?

Anum Zara Friday, February 16, 2018 03:37 PM

It was indeed a lengthy paper. I have barely managed to finish it. Writing and presentation skills were compromised in last few questions. I only got 20 minutes to attempt precis. Paragraph was easy but I am not happy with the title I have given. I wrote it when invigilating staff started snatching papers. It was due to comprehension and narration passage. They took most of my time. Last year, I came out after 2 hours. That paper was not lengthy.

It was lengthy, wasn't it? Kudos to you for managing to finish it on time :-) How much did you score in this subject last year?
And do you think it would be difficult for me to pass this subject because of this blunder, even if the rest of my paper went good, if not great?

Demonstrative Friday, February 16, 2018 05:53 PM

Same here. For the comprehension passage, I was left with less than five minutes. I lost twenty marks straightaway. Hopes are already forlorn, to be honest.

adan zahra Friday, February 16, 2018 05:59 PM

same here. i left 10 marks paper. and attempted last question in just 10 mints. Allah knows what will happen.

ultimatestruggler Friday, February 16, 2018 06:01 PM

comprehension : (

same happened to me
it wasn't comprehension, rather an essay; 3 to 4 things were asked in a single question and there were even question based on our personal opinion !

Both the passages of comprehension and precis were given from Wren and Martin's book.

Cotton candy Friday, February 16, 2018 07:04 PM

Yes it was a very lengthy paper.

I myself couldn't manage time and didn't do justice to the comprehension passage.

I also made blunder of PUNCTUATING Q5 B whereas it was supposed to be converted into indirect speech from direct. I lost straight 5 marks there because I made this blunder due of lack of time and confusion.

Same problem here. I attempted comprehension before precis and then ran out of time. Comprehension was opinion based.

Does writing and presentation skills matter ? Because i have scribbled so much in last few questions because of short time. Even I did cut some words and added a few by putting ^ in between lines.
Am I in hot water ?

Never have I ever attempted English paper this poorly before. I couldn't manage time and many of my MCQs were wrong. I don't think that I will survive this paper lol.

Last year, I scored 41. Hope for the best. I cannot guarantee that you will pass because this is the only paper which can give unexpected result. Even I am not sure that I will pass. I too have a lot of mistakes.

Yes, writing and presentation skills does matter and in all subjects. My writing was not that bad even at the end but due to shortage of time I was unable to work on paper presentation. Cutting and adding between lines make bad impression and examiners do not like that but chill at least they are better than mistakes. I try to keep my paper as neat and as flawless as I can. I usually use a lot of markers for presentation but due to shortage of time, today I remain unsuccessful in doing so.

The same happened to me, i also could not attempt the question related to pair of words and idioms... Nd the indirect passage was also left unattempted.
Paper was easy but it was designed in such a way as to consume more time of candidates. Lets see what happen.

Plz share the title of precis so that we may get a general idea regarding the correct title.

But what's done is done. Let's not fret about this anymore. We've still got 9 more to go and we wouldn't want to hang on to all these negative thoughts and mess them up.

All the best everyone

how do we write in paragraph form. By narrating it in indirect speech.

kosam zahra 222 Saturday, February 17, 2018 03:44 PM

if you read question than it states that " rewrite the following dialogue in direct speech in a paragraph form. SO we have to convert it to indirect speech .

Anum Zara Saturday, February 17, 2018 04:00 PM

Yes, requirement was to write in indirect speech and convert it in paragraph form. Dialogue is an example of direct speech and to convert it in paragraph one needs to convert it in indirect speech. It was most time consuming and energy draining question.

I read somewhere on social media that one should start with solving questions related to pair of words, idioms, sentence correction, punctuation, narration, prepositions and translation, then attempt precis and comprehension. I followed it and when I started indirect speech paragraph, I felt being trapped badly as it was one heck of task that sucked much time. I was left with 20 minutes when I started precis. Solving precis and comprehension hastily, was a nightmare. I gave more time to question of 5 marks than those of 40 marks. Same happened to me in essay paper where I thought that every topic is doable so, I wasted ample time in sketching outlines for 5 topics because I was stuck in every outline after four to five points, which resulted in incomplete outline and conclusion. Feeling disappointed.

Aaqib Javed Sunday, February 18, 2018 01:39 PM

Meet the man who missed 30 marks paper by following the same advice of doings passages in the last.... Alhumdulillah

'Climate determinism: How Climate Determines the Character of Nations' is the title that I forgot to write because of the hurry of moving on to next question. Missed Comprehension altogether and did not attempt some of the sentences which I could have made. Narration and translation are key culprits, though I wouldn't blame them as mismanagement of time in papers is a fairly recurrent thing with me.
One major explanation is my overconfidence about the subject; I never directly prepared anything related to the subject partly because I thought I could pass it without any preparation and partly because I started to prepare really late for this attempt.

I was greatly depressed following the debacle... so much so that I have started to enjoy rest of the papers ;)

It is people like me, who converted it into indirect speech, who made a blunder, not you. Despite it sounding unbelievably easy, that was probably what the question meant. So worry not you are among the lucky few who convinced themselves in the paper that fpsc could actually give 5 marks for simply adding full stops. And pray for the rest of us that we pass despite not being able to comprehend the question correctly.

Dialogue is a kind of direct speech and to convert it into paragraph, one needs to change it in indirect speech. There were not any punctuation marks because while writing a dialogue, we do not write it in inverted commas.
Example:
In direct sentence:
Saad said, "I am working."
In dialogue form:
Saad: I am working.

exactly we were to convert Saad: I am working to Saad said, "I am working", see the 2016 paper Q5 b for clarity when it wanted indirect form the paper mentioned indirect form. this time it said direct form. So let us just hope that these 5 marks do not cost us the exam.

It did not said to write it in direct form. It was said that dialogue is written in direct speech. We were not to write as
Said said, "I am working". We need to write it in indirect form that is
Saad told him that he was working.
Dialogue was already in direct form. It was not required to write it again in direct form in shape of paragraph by just decorating it with punctuations.

In 2016, question was exact opposite. It was already in indirect form. It was hell easy to convert it in direct form. In 2016, it was required to write as:
Saad said, "I am working".

I agree the question was very confusing as had the question said rewrite the dialogue in a paragraph and in direct form qe would have grasped it more easily. I really wish you were right because i made the same mistake but Alas it was not meant to be and we are now devoided of the 5 easiet marks in the paper.

Aaqib Javed Sunday, February 18, 2018 05:26 PM

Raziwaqar Sir, you are mistaken here. Miss Anam is correct. I am Writing the exact line written on the question paper: "Rewrite the following dialogue, written in direct speech, in a paragraph form". Here the phrase 'written in direct' speech is what's creating the confusion. But since the comma is after the word 'dialogue', this phrase is merely describing this word, and its not the command of the examiner. If examiner wanted you to write in direct speech then he should have used the command 'write' instead of 'written', which is a description.

I have seen this paper. You should examine carefully that in paper, indirect was wrongly mentioned. Dialogue is clearly written in direct form. Also dialogue is type of direct speech. The only way to write it in a paragraph was by changing it in indirect form. No punctuation is required in dialogue. There way no other way of doing that.
Arguing on this issue is useless. Examiner will check according to his instructions and not according to our understanding.
