What is the difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses?
dear friends
what is the difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses? 1.does the defining clause give essential information or in this clause more than 1 persons are involved? 2.does the non-defining clause gives additional information or in this clause only 1 person in involved? |

Quote:
Example. Where is the book that sir gave you yesterday Explanation: In the above sentence THAT SIR GAVE YOU YESTERDAY was necessary to write otherwsie the sentence would be ambigous. Ans. 2. Yes the non defining clause gives additional information. One or two persons can b involved. Example: Where is the book that sir gave you yesterday, which is also not available in the library. (which wala hisa non defining clause hai) and it is also called non essential clause.

Another tip to recognise and differentiate between both clauses is that;
in a defining clause there is no COMA(,) before it, and in a non-defining clause there is COMA(,) before it. See the following examples He was the boy who stood first in the class. (Defining clause) He lives near a big market, where he can find every thing. (Non-defining Clause)
