As far as expansion is concerned, it is a note, simply read daily dawn news paper. From dawn, point out any editorial which you think that it is an important. Read it twice, after that just write down what you have assumed. In last you will have to check it by yourself. Point out your mistakes. Then overcome your that area where you commit mistakes frequently. That is it. It would not help you out in expansion but also you would be able to attempt your precis effectively.

I think most of the candidates fail in this paper because of their selective study methodology. Selective and targeted study is a good strategy to prepare optional subjects and some of compulsories but not wise for English Grammar and Composition.

English Grammar and Composition is so designed that your grammar, reading skill and expression are checked simultaneously. I will suggest CE2013 aspirants to have a good command on grammar so that you may be on safer side in case of "surprise" questions; it will facilitate you in in other papers as well especially in Essay as grammatical and spelling correctness is expected to you while taking a competitive exam.

For Precise I will suggest to prepare it properly with a lot of practice. Apart from solving past papers, make precise of paragraphs from writings of famous prose writers like Bernard Shaw, Huxley, Russell. You should be well versed in comprehending the content as well as in condensing it in fewer words. In CE 2012 Precise was very difficult. Most of the candidates even failed to comprehend it properly. Their views were at variance about the title of the precise and most of them were wrong as I observed and had already guessed that they are not going to make it because of this single question. In fact it is not only a 25 marks question, it presents the crux of all your reading and writing capabilities to the examiner. So I will not favour the opinion of taking it lightly and resting on good luck for result..

The sequence of questions does not matter, their quality does. Anyhow it is better attempting questions of shorter length first. I did Precise and Expansion in the last as these are quite time consuming. You must save 45 to 60 minutes for Precise; the requirement of time depends on the difficulty level of the question and the capability of the candidate. However it is you only who is to decide how much time is needed for each question. Divide your time beforehand and keep an eye on watch so that you may have enough time at your disposal.

Prepare Synonyms from past papers and GRE books. If you have that much a stemina to digest all :)
A practical tactic there would be to have a look on word morphology (roots,prefixes and suffixes) For word roots you may consult Word Smart I. It has a list of English roots which will help you guessing the meaning from available options for synonyms and antonyms. For example in 2012 there was a word [COLOR=Blue][B][U]Insipid[/U][/B][/COLOR]. In(prefix)sip(root)id(suffix). In depicts that the word is giving a negative connotation, sip is very easy to guess (yes, a sip of coffee/tea etc) it pertains to taste. So the morphology of word is suggesting something that is not taste worthy.

For expansion just practice is needed, you have done enough of it.But it will help you only if you get your expansions checked by some expert who can guide to improve your weak areas. They can give any topic for expansion, may be among these or may not. There can be no final word about it. Just do practice and refine your expression, if it is good enough then be relaxed and turn your attention to other things:).
