2010 precis..... make ur effort!!!

Of all the characteristics of ordinary human nature envy is the most unfortunate; not only does the envious person wish to inflict misfortune and do so whenever he can with impunity, but he is also himself rendered unhappy by envy. instead of deriving pleausre from what he has, he derives pain from what others have. if he can, he deprives others of their advantages, which to him is as desirable as as it would be to secure the same advantages himself. if this passion is allowed to run riot it becomes fatal to all excellence, and even the most useful exercise of exceptional skill. why should a medical man go to see his patients in a car when the labourer has to walk to his work? why should the scientifc investigator be allowed to spend his time in a warm room when others have to face the inclemency of the elements? why should a man who possesses some rare talent of great importance to the world be saved fromt he drudgery of his own housework? to such questions envy finds no answer. fortunately, however, there is in human nature a compensating passion, namely that of admiration. whosoever wishes to increase human happiness must wish to increase admiration and to diminish envy. what cure is there for envy? for the saint there is the cure of selflessness, though even in the case of saints envy of other saints is by no means impossible. but, leaving saints out of account, the only cure of envy in the case of ordinary men and women is happiness, and the difficulty is that envy is itself a terrible obstacle to happiness. but the envious man may say: 'what is the good of telling me that the cure of envy is happiness? i cannot find happiness while i continue to feel envy, and you tell me that i cannot cease to be envious until i find happiness.' but real life is never so logical as this. mereley to realize the cause of one's own envious feeling is to take a long step towards curing them.

My effort

Respected Elders and Juniors
I have tried to make precis of 2010 css paper. here it is.

Précis: Envy -- The curse of human nature and its cure.
Envy, the most absurd characteristics of human nature, always gives misery of unhappiness to the envious person. He always thinks about the gains of others which he doesn’t want them to have and thus add pains to his life. In contrast, admiration which is the key to happiness and resultantly the cure of envy. (In contrast, admiration is the key to happiness and happiness infact is the cure of envy.) To admit and realize causes of one own envious feelings is the road to curb this disease

Hoping for critical evaluation.
Thanks

@Engr Mansoor

Nice effort. I appreciate your style. Some suggestions:

1. You put a sentence within brackets. It is almost the same sentence you had written just before that sentence. I didn't understand its logic. It seems a little absurd in precis.

2. If you see the main points of the precis. Then in my thinking there are three main points. First point is that why envy is bad, second point is about its cure and the third point is why an envious man cant get rid of it. You included first two points but missed the last one.

However overall your precis is a good try. Keep it up.

Regards

Thanks

Thanks for ur comments.
Actually i have written the sentence in brackets as an alternative for the for the previous one.I mean i was seeking suggestion that which one between these two will be appropriate to use.
In contrast, admiration which is the key to happiness and resultantly the cure of envy. (In contrast, admiration is the key to happiness and happiness infact is the cure of envy.)
And about missing the third part you are right.
Thanks for your time and precious comments.

Envious person accumulates its sufferings not by rekindling the lit of pleasure but by having ill desires and their application on others for getting them deprived of their pleasures. This sort of mindset utilizes its faculties in wrong way, and becomes unanswerable to some prevailing questions. To counterbalance this effect human has an intrinsic to add richness in its life by feeling the pleasure, which should be enhanced to subjugate envy. Happiness is the only cure which finds itself easy in curbing the envy.

@ mansoor: good effort
@ riaz: can b better

here is mine:

PLZ EVALUATE:

"Envy is one of the worst human attributes. It is a double-edged sword that does not only hurt others but also takes the peace and happiness away from the life of an envious person himself. However, human nature is also endowed with the characteristic of admiration that can offset the ills of envy and provide happiness. Therein lies the real remedy for envy which, in turn, remains elusive because of the envy itself. It is this vicious cycle that accentuates the difficulty of the problem.Nevertheless, an attempt to undertand the causes of envy can greatly lead to their cure."

AN ENVIOUS PERSONALITY

Being envious is in human nature. An envious person never find happiness in what he has.He always complaints about what others have.He desires to get more. And the more he gets the more he wants.Even he does not notice how other fulfill their needs by minimum resources. Its necessary for such kind of person to be happy. But when its suggested to him he always regret this idea.He should himself realize and make efforts to get rid of envy.

Envy is the worst passion of all. An envious person cannot see other’s happiness, in this way he not only destroys his own joys but also add pain in others' lives. An easy solution for this is to praise others, but an envoy man cannot do so. He will find mundane answers when he will be told about it.

Title: Envy, the Enemy of joys

Title: Envy; a curable passion

Envy is the most deplorable of all the emotions of humans, where an envious person not only hurts himself by sustaining a state of discontent but may also hurt those (if he can), who are a source of envy to him.The emotion of envy takes away the sense of rationality from a person and ultimately without analyzing the reasons of the happening of a particular phenomenon, he becomes envious and unhappy. However, Admiration can oust the feelings of envy. The cure of envy is happiness, and happiness can come from admiring others, though it may seem impossible to an envious person. But realizing the reasons for his envious feelings is the first step in diminishing them.

xaara~hussain Thursday, November 04, 2010 11:59 AM

what i have been told is that we should not change/enhance the main idea of the passage, hence, replacing jealousy with envy here is like giving a new dimension to the topic (as u r not given the opportunity to explain jealousy and envy as same phenomena). so, there is no point in using jealousy here.

The Cause and Cure of Feeling Envy

Envy is an unfortunate trait that incurs ill-fortune in people's lives. An envious sou is often unhappy with his belongings and attempts steal advantages enjoyed by others. The feeling of envy saps away acumen from apt people. The remedy of envy is admiration as it fetches happiness. Happiness, in fact, is antithesis to envy. It can be attained when one understands the cause of feeling envious.

Express yourself in simple words in the precis paper and inshallah u will rock in the exam. Also, avoid stuff that is not suggested by the author in passage summarization(precis).

xaara~hussain Friday, November 05, 2010 01:42 PM

'u have 56 marks' is a very subjective term. it does not define which question gave u how many marks! maybe examiner was very lenient with u, (2010 english precis and composition has escaped the "ragra-fying", but next time this may be the victim. u never know!).
I would still state that replacing the "Core word" of precis with its synonym is fatal!

I feel it necessary to share with you people what I believe is inevitable in making a precis of any passage. Before that, I disagree with the view that 'jealousy' and envy are synonyms. These are two different words inasmuch as two varying feelings. It can be simplified in terms of Urdu. Envy stands for " Rishk karna " , while Jealousy means "Hasad karna". I hope the difference is clear now.

Now coming to the argument whether synonyms must be employed at all or not. The simplest answer is YES. It is however, not as easy as it seems in saying Yes to it. Sometimes it is very puzzling to replace a word with appropriate synonym. Take for instance, the example of Envy and jealousy case.

Lastly, the idea of not replacing the 'core word' is right to some extent. I would add to it that instead of core word, 'core idea' or what is called 'central idea' of the precis must NEVER be obliterated. That's the soul of precis making and the simplest rule is that NEVER add any idea or information which was not provided in the original passage.

Precise Rules For Precis

Precise Rules For Precis

1. Read the given passage, as much as times u like, and try to get the main idea of it.
2. Along with main idea also search out the supporting ideas.
3. Jot down main points on rough page.
4. Example or any explanatory statement cant be mentioned in precis.
5. Example is only use in precis,Obviously in condense form, when it is giving any new idea.
6. After extracting the main idea from the given passage, connect these points in logical manner
.... Dont use the wording of original passage except names.
.... Use easy language to express yourself in the condense passage.
.... Dont add or subtract any crucial point or idea. Dont give any suggestion.
.... Avoid the use of I, WE, US, MY MINE, YOUR, YOU ETC.
9. Now compare Your condense passage with that of original one (are both passages equating each other, if yes, than your precis is okay).

HOW TO GIVE TITLE?
1. The clue for title may be present in first or last sentence of Original passage, otherwise try to find it in the middle of the passage. But most of the time first and last sentence help in this regard.
2. The title should be objective and short.

I know the difference between envy and jealousy but the point is in this piece of narration it is not in the same meaning we know. here the writer has used it in jealousy's context. otherwise, being envious has nothing wrong in it!

If the writer wanted to employ the meaning of 'Jealousy' in it, I think he had at his discretion to do so. We are suppose to work with what we have been provided rather looking for what could have been provided. In my post above, I have mentioned the strict rules which must be taken care of in making a precis of any given passage.

Dear Imran,

At the outset, I urge you to please grasp my words rationally rather than emotionally.

I believe you have understood the thought hidden in the original passage. However, in reproducing it in your own words, you have deviated from the the central theme and inserted your own remarks. Let me tell you simplistically.
...exercising whimsical control on external world
The original passage contains no such idea.
...if this negativistic trait becomes the dominant feature of ones personality
The original passage does not suppose envy to be a dominant feature. This is primarily your own speculation which is not found in the original passage.

There are some syntax and vocabulary discrepancies as well.

FURthermore if this negativistic trait becomes the dominant feature of ones personality, it saps all the tremendous potentialities
'If' refers to some condition/prerequisite and it must be followed by futuristic word e.g 'may', will, would, shall, should, etc.

The correct sentence should be:

if this negativistic trait becomes the dominant feature of ones personality, it may/will/would sap all the tremendous potentialities

Lastly, the 'Economy of Words'. You precis should not exceed +-5 words 1/3 the length of the original passage. I think your precis exceeds the limit.

Brother, I have highlighted the shortcomings I found. I would suggest you to reread the precis you have written and simply try again. :))

I would be glad if my findings were rectified by any other senior member.
