4th Paragraph

4th Paragraph

In former times when window-pane in your house got broken, you would call the glazier to put in a new one, or if your lights fused, the electrician would be sent for to put them right. Nowadays people are their own glaziers and electricians.

Before the war, when wages were relatively low, people did not think of doing these things for themselves, but during the war, when so many artisans were away in the armed forces, the master of the house had to undertake this sort of job himself. To his surprise he got to like sawing wood and gluing it, putting in new light fuses or new washers in running taps and all the hundred and one repair jobs there are to be done around most houses. By the time the war was over it had become a habit with him.

In the post-war period of full employment the number of artisans available is limited, many having found it more profitable to take work in factories, while those that are left are able to charge high prices for their services. Now that the householder has got the hang of mending leaking pipes and broken chairs, he sees no reason why he should pay someone else a lot of money to do something he really enjoys doing himself; and so in recent years the ‘do-it-yourself’ movement has grown rapidly. In the ironmonger’s we can buy sets of ‘do-it-yourself’ tools which include everything we may need for repairs in the home, and in the bookshops, books are also available to tell us how to use the tools we have just bought. So clever have we all become that we are no longer satisfied only with mending things, we want to make them too; and so, to cater for this demand, shops are now selling. ‘Do-it-yourself’ kit, which enable the man-in-the-street toi build anything he likes from a coffee-table to a sailing boat.

With every passing day people are becoming wiser, that is why unlike past, they prefer self done work to paid work. This change is brought by war when availability of artists became dearthy, and people started fixing small problems on their own pertaining to the household and now this is very much in vogue. Now they have become accustomed of setting things in right order and of reconditioning. In this they are also helped by the different Tools and Books available in the market providing guidance and information.Such supportive tools and books have enabled even the layman to make the things he is not skilful in.

Peoples are now own glaziers and electricians as it was opposite in past. Low wages before war compelled peoples call artisans for work and in war day’s housemaster have to do by him because of non availability. Limited availability, more profitable work at factories, and high wages of remaining now instead of paying these, now people enjoy doing work and that resulted in flourish of do-it-yourself tools. From hardware stores and bookshops peoples can buy these tools and their manual. Now because of demand, interest and more smartness in making news items along with repair these do it yourself kits are easily available. (104)

Title: Self Reliance

The help of professionals were sought in past for fixing household problems. The trend first changed during war when armed officers left their homes. Lack of artisans moved people to fix their problems by themselves. The task adopted forcibly, proved pleasant and became a habit. After war most professionals preferred working in factories that raised the cost of available ones. As householders learnt these works they preferred to do it rather paying high. Self-help became popular and further helped by tool kits and books explaining how to mend the broken and how to make something new. The way skills transferred to a common man. (104)
