CSI Forensic Science – A brief peek
Forensic Science is the use of science to solve crimes, and is quickly becoming one of the most useful sciences in the world. Forensic Science derives its techniques from fingerprints, to teeth, to human behavior, forensic science is a very broad field and is a requirement for almost every crime-solving unit in law enforcement. Forensic Science is based on multiple aspects such as dentistry, psychology, pathology, odontology, anthropology, or toxicology.
Fingerprints are perhaps the most useful elements in forensic science. As every human has their own, specific fingerprint, this system can accurately determine a culprit if a fingerprint is left at the scene of a crime. The fingerprint itself consists of an impression of the ridges on a finger. These ridges, also called dermal ridges, vary in depth, length, width, and pattern. These variables in the ridges are specific to human beings. It is why no two humans have the same depth, length, width or exact same pattern in their fingerprints. Although a person’s fingerprint is constantly changing, the state-of-the-art computers of crime solving divisions account for this transformation and are still reliable and precise. As technology advances, the methods of gathering fingerprints from crime scenes have become more reliable and trustworthy.
Forensic dentistry is quickly becoming a very useful tool in providing the age of a victim, identifying a victim by comparing teeth to previous dental records, and offering in-depth analysis of bite mark injuries since like a fingerprint, every human’s teeth are slightly different than another’s.
Forensic psychology is an excellent tool that has been used in the goal of understanding the criminal mind. Expert psychologists write long, detailed reports following their discussions with criminals, and this helps law enforcement agencies comprehend and predict how the criminal mind will typically act. This is a useful tool in preventing crimes and in helping criminals who are affected by mental diseases.
To conclude, forensic science is an intersection between the careful calculations of science and the complex world of law and criminology. Through the advancing technology that provides these forensic tools, crimes are solved correctly at a higher rate. Forensic science is not only a testament to humanity’s constant evolution but it also improves the safety and protection of the general population and is one of the most useful tools in law enforcement today. The area has grown leaps and bounds after shows like CSI and Law and Order have focused on the diciplines techniques.
