when the English overcome India the official language was Persian. the English ruler changed the official language from Persian to Urdu in Perso-Arabic script. they did not replaced Persian with English.
The Hindus of Benares were demanding Hindi with nagri scrip as an official language in 1867 which led to Hindi-Urdu controversy.

So, what happened then after the agitation made by Hindus at Benaras. Was Hindi made the official language or what else? How Government calmed down the protesters and what initiatives were taken to address the controversy?

Due to the agitation spread by Hindus for making Hindi an official language.
government of India, in 1900, declared Hindi as second official language. These two languages, Urdu and Hindi, remained official languages till independence.

The debate is not over yet..

I come across this fact repeatedly and from number of sources, superior sources too, that in 1835 the British replaced Persian with English as an official language.

Perhaps, it means that in 1835 persian was replaced with English as a medium of education. Lord william Bentinck was the governor-general then and the role of macaulay was important in this regard.
