So, what happened then after the agitation made by Hindus at Benaras. Was Hindi made the official language or what else? How Government calmed down the protesters and what initiatives were taken to address the controversy?

The debate is not over yet..
I come across this fact repeatedly and from number of sources, superior sources too, that in 1835 the British replaced Persian with English as an official language. Perhaps, it means that in 1835 persian was replaced with English as a medium of education. Lord william Bentinck was the governor-general then and the role of macaulay was important in this regard.
