There is no definite answer to your question as the course outline of MA Economics and quality of learning varies from institution to institution.
I know a few people who have Masters in Economics but still didn’t go for it in CSS; as some consider it low scoring. Again this depends on your proficiency in the subject, how much you expect from it in CSS and the alternatives available as well. This is what I heard about the subject. I am not from that very discipline so may be someone else can give you a better and more encouraging reply.

Dear brother, I am also opting for Economics in CSS 2010 Exam; I have done Master in Economics from LUMS. Based on my experience so far, the syllabus of the economics paper in the CSS exam is much like the syllabus of Economics in BA, though a tad higher in difficulty level. Some universities follow independent syllabus in the master program, in our case in LUMS, we have to write a master thesis of 16 units and there are two seminar courses and two more courses designed to equip students with quantitative skills. I suggest that if you are interested in Economics go for it in the CSS exam but you need not to do a master in economics for that; only BA level knowledge of Economics will suffice.

Brother you didnt specified from which university you will do your masters. Some universities like Punjab and Peshawar universities follow HEC set course, while in other universities like QAU, IIU and LUMS teachers specify their own syllabus which changes from year to year. However paper 1 of CSS is covered in all universities syllabus, but for paper 2, you have to study more, I would suggest you to follow latest "Pakistan Economic Survey", "Issues in Pakistan's Economy" by Akbar Zaidi and "Management of Pakistan Economy" by V.A. Jafri and Rashid Amjad (although the last book is much older but will give you some background). Try to read Dawn and News economics related articles. Regards |

Bro
I opted economics and honestly speaking the sylabus is not beyond what one studies in BA level economics. What you need is to be focused on basic concepts of the subject and not to be too complicated as i have observed many candidates who opt economics try to mix up too much mathematics into it. Avoid it where it is not needed. Secondly you should be concerned with the topics that are being covered in the past papers. What I have found is that there is usually one question each from micro, macro, monetary, public finance, int'l economics in Paper I. In Paper II you should be having a different approach as mere book reading might not be sufficient at times. You have to apply your knowledge of the subject on Pakistan as a developing economy. At times, articles in newspapers and magzines may be a greater help than books in this paper. Finally concentrate on MCQs as these are very much conceptual in nature and have got solid marks if you are able to answer 16-18 correctly. Good luck!

As i recentally do my master in Economics & also go through CSS syllabus, so i want to disillusion some basic points here; First thing is that in CSS they want to examine our analytical power rather than our cramming ability; syllabus of paper 1 is similar to MA economics but paper B is completely based on current economic situation. And even in paper A questions are very twisting & confusing

I have recently done MSc in Economics from QAU. Just skimmed through the past papers of Economics; I found it as a sweet piece of cake . Strongly recommended to those who have even an iota of knowledge!
