Essay is defined as prose composition with a focused subject of discussion or a long, systematic discourse.

In my opinion there is no difference at all.
As far as your question is concerned, essay in competitive exam is to appraise one’s own point of view, perception as well as discernment and knowledge about that particular topic.

While Essays written by Bacon, Lamb, Ruskin etc seem different to us due to the changed literary tradition. They wrote on the subjects concerning their time period. The most notable thing is that they were writers, keen observers so as the specialists. They did not write for any “competitive exam”, they just wanted to present their point of view regarding particular subject matter. If we even try to compare their literary works with the literature of today, there will be a lot of difference because our stylistics, semantics, and literary norms are far more modified, customized and characterized.

Actually Bacon challenged the most established norms and ideals of everyday life by presenting the factual and practical concepts. That is why he started his most of the essays with "What". So as he was so sure about his pragmatic and empirical approach towards those ideals it was possibly the reason behind his titles starting with Of, as he himself termed his essays "counsels civil and moral".
