In short, both are warm streams and help keep the northen coastlines at high latitudes stay warm despite dier distance from equator. Both these currents originate from North Equatorial current which is a warm curent. Gulf stream when reaches western coasts of Europe, it is known as North Atlantic Drift and it keeps the harbours ice free due its warmth. Plus the Norwegian current (which is an extension of North Atlantic drift further North) does the same the higher latitudes. An evidence of this effect is that European Coasts stay ice free thnks to Gulf stream whereas North American Coasts, lying at same latitude as Eastern Coasts, are frozen due to cold Labrador Current
Similar effects are observed by Kuroshio current. You can study about this in detail on net or from some authentic book. Sarfraz Bajwa's book is quite self explanatory on this

And it goes without saying that by helping coasts stay ice free, warm streams like Gulf and Kuroshio boost Trade because ships can travel in and out of coasts this way, which is not possible at frozen coasts obviously.
