One Book Recommendation
Brilliant Minds,
I am a new comer to this group. I need suggestions regarding books for the preparation for the CSS. I am opting for Journalism. Kindly suggest just one book as I dont have time to go through alots of books. I also know that there must not be just a single book to cover all the syllabus but in that case name the book which you believe would cover the most of it. I am already doing a job from 8-5 daily and can only utilize my weekends for it. Your valuable inputs will be highly appreciated. Regards, Shaukat |

Considering Journalism paper pattern in CSS 2011, one may clearly see deviance from old type bookish paper. One should also consult resources other than books like internet etc to cover topics like Recent role of electronic media, latest trends in Journalism, socio-economic impact of tv channels etc. As far as book is concerned, I would prefer Mass Communication by Imtiaz Shahid over Abid Tehami's book. Because later has not been updated and contains old facts and figures.

I second Usman Khalid in his advice for using other sources for journalism as well. In fact not only journalism, for all other subjects too. You need to be very clear about current happenings as well as their impact and relation with your topic. The best way to do so is go through the subject matter and then try to see everything in the media through the lenses of your subject matter. For example, if you have studied the content and ethics of news in the book, concentrate on the news pattern while watching TV or reading a newspaper. This will delvelop your critical thinking.
As far as single book is concerned, I would suggest "Exploring the world of Journalism" by Mirza yousaf. Only concentrate on the book, try to understand each concept given by the write.

usman khalid is right that sticking to a book for jouralism would not be appropriate. use net and other sources too, as the trend of question paper has shifted from theoratical to practical questions.good luck
