Yes there are Pakistani authored books focusing on the feminist movement in Pakistan and gender studies: 1) Finding our way readings on women in Pakistan by Fareha Zafar 2)Locating the self edited by Nighat Said Khan, Rubina Saigol and Afiya Shehrbano Zia Finding our way traces the feminist movement in Pakistan. Moreover, the article state of women studies in Pakistan in social sciences by Rubina Saigol is available online. (http://www.cosspak.org/books/Social-...inal18.3.2.pdf) I also have Farzana bari's article on women parliamentarians in Pakistan, I'll put its summary up in the Subject section Gender studies. Personally, I think If you can find the articles/books mentioned in the syllabus this subject will be effectively prepared. Regards, |

preparation for G.S
As I opted for the gender studies, I would like to share my experience about this subject.
1) Gender studies is an inter-disciplinary subject (it borrows various concepts and theories from sociology, psychology and anthropology) in the field of social science. 3) "Gender studies" and "women studies" do have very much in common. Actually gender studies has evolved from women studies( in the late 20th century). 4) Gender studies mainly investigates causes and implications of "gender disparity", "gender inequality", "gender segregation" and "gender polarization". Now, regarding the background needed, I don't think that one has to be from a specific field of study to opt this subject. I am an electrical engineer and I found no difficulty in grasping the core idea of the subject. Though this subject could be an easy subject for those who have studied subjects of social science ( like the aforementioned subjects). Recommended book Advanced gender studies written by Moazam Hashmi (Advanced Publisher) This is a very good book having pin pointed concepts and understanding for a CE candidate. Web search and important links Do following searches researchers and activists a) Karl Marx ( Marxism, Socialist feminism, anti-capitalism, capitalism and gender oppression?) b) Kate Millett (she was the proponent of "Radical feminism" theory). c) Judith Lorber ( Her work in the field of social construction of gender). d) Judith Butler ( search for "Is gender performed vs. gender is performative" in context of social construction of gender ) e) Eve Sedgwick, Michel Foucault, Sandra K Hoyt, Alan G johnson, f) Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Alice Paul ( with perspective of "1st wave of feminism") g) Sigmund Freud (A Brief perusal) Some important terms a) Patriarchy and Androcentric. b) Sexist c) Feminist d) Egalitarian e) Systemizing vs. empathizing (Male vs. Female Brain ) f) Pussy riot, grrls, guerrilla girls, pink floor, bikini kill Important theories a) Essentialism b) gender performativity c) theories of globalization. d) All mentioned theories in the course outline. e) Psychoanalysis f) Psychometric Pakistan through gender lens a) search for a publication named as "position of a Pakistani women in women in 21st century, a long way yo go " Tips regarding preparation a) Try to grasp the concept of theories with pace otherwise you'll feel stuck. b) FOR reference remember the aforementioned terms and names. c) Internet search is a must. Gender studies can also act as a "reinforcement subject" in psychology and sociology. But this, significantly, depends upon your aptitude. Hope this help. Feel free to ask.

Brief answer of Q5
Quote:
(These points may overlap with NGOs weaknesses) 1) Dependence upon foreign grants and funds. 2) Lack of local trends and experience. 3) Scarcity of sources and funds. 4) Foreign or non-indigenous personification of local women. 5) Diminished access to "government's legislative" system. 6) Focus over "political activities" rather than "welfare activities". Strengths 1) Transposition from reacting to government legislation to focusing on three primary goals a) Securing women's political representation in National assembly. b) Raising women's consciousness. c) Countering suppression of women's rights by defining and articulating position on events as they occur. 2) Interdigitation of various women associations e.g. Women Action Forum(WAF) , All Pakistan Women Women's Association(APWA), Pakistan Women's Lawyers Association(PWLA), and the Business and Professional Women's Association(BPWA). 3) Evolving global perceptions and practices.( Global narratives actually work as catalysts) 4) Entrenched feet on grass root level. 5) Social activists i.e. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Malala Yousafzai.
