Q2: Precise

Of all the characteristics of ordinary human nature envy is the most unfortunate; not only does the envious person wish to inflict misfortune and do so whenever he can with impunity, but he is also himself rendered unhappy by envy. instead of deriving pleausre from what he has, he derives pain from what others have. if he can, he deprives others of their advantages, which to him is as desirable as as it would be to secure the same advantages himself. if this passion is allowed to run riot it becomes fatal to all excellence, and even the most useful exercise of exceptional skill. why should a medical man go to see his patients in a car when the labourer has to walk to his work? why should the scientifc investigator be allowed to spend his time in a warm room when others have to face the inclemency of the elements? why should a man who possesses some rare talent of great importance to the world be saved fromt he drudgery of his own housework? to such questions envy finds no answer. fortunately, however, there is in human nature a compensating passion, namely that of admiration. whosoever wishes to increase human happiness must wish to increase admiration and to diminish envy. what cure is there for envy? for the saint there is the cure of selflessness, though even in the case of saints envy of other saints is by no means impossible. but, leaving saints out of account, the only cure of envy in the case of ordinary men and women is happiness, and the difficulty is that envy is itself a terrible obstacle to happiness. but the envious man may say: 'what is the good of telling me that the cure of envy is happiness? i cannot find happiness while i continue to feel envy, and you tell me that i cannot cease to be envious until i find happiness.' but real life is never so logical as this. mereley to realize the cause of one's own envious feeling is to take a long step towards curing them.

Question 3: Comprehension

And still it moves. the words of Galileo, murmured when the tortures of the Inquisition had driven him to recant the Truth he knew, apply in a new way to our world today. sometimes, in the knowledge of all that has been discovered, all that has been done to make life on the planet happier and more worthy, we may be tempted to settle down to enjoy our heritage. that would, indeed, be the betrayal of our trust.

These men and women of the past have given everything---comfort, time, treasure, peace of mind and body, life itself---that we might live as we do. the challenege to each one of us is to carry on their work for the sake of future generations.

The adventurous human mind must not falter. still must we question the old truths and work for the new ones. still must we risk scorn, cynicism, neglect, loneliness, poverty, persecution, if need be. we must shut our ears to easy voice which tells us that human nature will never alter as an exucse for doing nothing to make life more worthy.

Thus will the course of the history of mankind go onward, and the world we know move into a new splendour for those who are yet to be.

Questions:
1) What made Galileo recant the Truth he knew?
2) What is the heritage being alluded to in the first paragraph?
3)what does the 'betrayal of our trust' imply
4) Why do we need to question the old truths and work for the new ones?
Explain the words or expressions as highlighted/underlined in the passage.

mr_mirchi2 Saturday, March 06, 2010 09:16 PM

Dear friends,

the paper was not that much tough but it needed some consideration. MCQs created problem because the Q1 part "a" was mentioned on the question paper but not on the answer sheet. You have to attempt only five. And in the same question part "b" was mentioned but no option was there on the answer sheet. it took time and candidates and the examinar too was disturbed in the centre.

My answers for MCQs were
Q.1. (a)
i-a
ii-b
iii-c
iv-a
v-a
viii. b

(b)

i. b
iv. b
v. b
vi. d

Essay is to "compose". this is right.

Title Of My Precise Was Envy & Its Cure And I Think I Might Have Screwed It Up Because I Neva Paid Attention On The Point 100 Words. Even Though I Wrote Like Almost A Page And I Have Very Conjusted Writing So Fingers Crossed !

And I Screwed Up 2 Word Meanings As Well.... They Gave Very Confusing Marking Sheets !!!!

I Wana Ask , Can It Be ......

My Friend is very ill , I hope he gets well soon
She Spent Many Sleepless Nights

Please Make Me Feeel Goodddddd ~ and Say Yesssssssssssssssssssssss

umarabbas Saturday, March 06, 2010 11:07 PM

well for the first sentence...you have completely changed the meaning i am afraid... so that makes it wrong....as per the statement you are afraid that he will die and any change should not change the meaning of the sentence i assume....

the second one might be ok...i am not sure about it....my title for precise was "In come envy, out goes happiness" ...am not sure about the title too but that was what i could find catchy enough at that time...secondly i wrote a precise of precisely 100 marks....my writing was congested as well...so that made it around 1/3rd of the sheet...a precise is always a shorter version!!

mangat1 Saturday, March 06, 2010 11:16 PM

@ Umarabbas

I asked Last Island about the first one, the afraid thing, she says its CORRECT. And regarding the change in the sense, people have commented above changing sense as whole.
Ali Khanz says
5) My friend is very ill, i hope he will soon die.
My friend is very ill, I hope he gets well soon
isn't the sense changed here ???

umarabbas Saturday, March 06, 2010 11:23 PM

brother...go through the question again...it speaks out "Correct the following" now a correction is a change of a word or two in a sentence, not its basic structure, unless there is a grave grammatical mistake...

he may be write... but then so may be the following options then:

1- My friend is very ill, the doctors say he will die soon.
2- My friend is very ill, he may die any moment.
3- My friend is very ill, i think i may loose him.

all are correct...i mean its just an example....

consider the statement....your friend is ill and he may die. the question does not state anywhere that you even remotely wish that he may get well soon. the question shows your fear not your wish....

anyways this is for the examiner to decide ...:)

and yeah if the change of sense is allowed i would rather suggest to rewamp all the answers....for example:

1- this house is built of bricks and stones...

write this house is built of mud.
or....this house is built of Halal ki kamai ....heheheh....

instead of ....this house is built of brick and stone.

i hope i am clear.... :)

Demise is the end of existence or activity; failure or termination. So the option is End.

i believe it was the most easiest paper of english in css history

umarabbas Sunday, March 07, 2010 05:45 AM

@Rizwan...

Brother...this easy trend has been following for the past two to three years...and i believe primarily it's because of the poor standard of english...many of our brothern found this paper difficult too....so the FPSC guys are deliberately lowering the difficulty of the English paper(s) in order to give the rest of the pack some chance of competing..!!! the english precise paper last year was easy too....infact the last year's essay was also more traditional ya may say!! Women in Islam and so forth...!!

Dear Last Island

Demise is the time when something ends....therefore it means death....at death life ends....end cannot be a synonym to it as it refers to the "time of end" or "the period of end" and not the end itself....

sparkofighter Sunday, March 07, 2010 08:49 AM

here correction needed Demise mean death not end

Mossavir Wazir Sunday, March 07, 2010 09:37 AM

I also wrote "Is the climate of Pakistan better than that of England?"
Since they had given a question mark at the end, it was meant to be in the interrogative form.
^^^ I hope we're right, Omar?
Haha, logically we are right.. But lets see what the examiner decides :)

Overall, I think the paper was set realistically. I mean these are the words that an educated person should know, like acrimonious, conscientious, etc. What they gave in previous years was stupid, because i think only a person who is fond of cramming dictionaries would be knowing them. secondly, the notes had a good choice, a person like me who can't write on philosophical topics could easily write about internet.

Personally i believe the topic should be a word or a phrase or a sentence which lets the reader to guess beforehand what he/she is about to read..!!! your title does not refer to "envy" anywhere...which was the theme of the passage.....it is like having a title of "A guide to Sciences" for a book on Sociology...what do u say, will people buy it? No, because they won't eva knw that its a book for sociology...

Hope i made myself clear....anyways ya aint gonna loose alot and besides b happy for the stuff that ya penned down correctly...
