AV Programs are Important but not very Important. Stealth viruses will always remain undetected by them as the ppl who create them regularly updates them and plays cat and mouse with the Gov agencies. I think a Firewall will be much better, or a AV like kaspersky because its proactive defence is very awesome. If you have a strong firewall like zoneAlarm and some knowledge of the internet, you wont allow any suspicious connection being made from your PC.. so personally I prefer firewall more than an av ;P

I think kaspersky and you must also enable its proactive defence combined with zone alarm latest edition is a perfect combination but you must have a good machine to run them as it will lag any normal or low quality machines in terms of low ram etc
