In the broadest sense, information technology refers to both the hardware and software that are used to store, retrieve, and manipulate information. At the lowest level you have the servers with an operating system. Installed on these servers are things like database and web serving software. The servers are connected to each other and to users via a network infrastructure. And the users accessing these servers have their own hardware, operating sytem, and software tools.

Information technology, is defined as:
"the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." Encompassing the computer and information systems industries, information technology is the capability to electronically input, process, store, output, transmit, and receive data and information, including text, graphics, sound, and video, as well as the ability to control machines of all kinds electronically.
Information technology is comprised of computers, networks, satellite communications, robotics, videotexts, cable television, electronic mail ("e-mail"), electronic games, and automated office equipment. The information industry consists of all computer, communications, and electronics-related organizations, including hardware, software, and services. Completing tasks using information technology results in rapid processing and information mobility, as well as improved reliability and integrity of processed information.

When we learn the latest information about the technology which in now-a-days being enhance to utilize these information practically and solved the requirement of the causal person is called as IT.

IT is the merger of two sciences i.e. Computer Sciences and High Speed Communication Sciences.

I think mr. Zafar u hav described the real functionality of the IT, and that is true. but in the IT subject we always read the mediums through which we can analysis,designs, manipulates, implements the information at a high speed. And in the modern age, the computer-based tech is the fastest technology. so IT is directly belongs to computer-based tech. so it is

Yes u r right Maleeka Shafiq, in IT we can use computer as a Tool…
But in medical sciences we also use IT Technology, like MIR, ECG, Ultra Sound etc and what are the robots they all come in IT Technology with difference shapes and expertise.

REAL MEANING: TECHNOLOGY ABOUT INFORMATION is called INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.

It is a mis-understanding to mean IT as INFORMATION ABOUT TECHNOLOGY.
