It is 200.

Suppose he has X money at the start. He spents 10% of X and what remains with him is 90% of X. Now he spents 60% of the remainng sum i.e. 60% of 0.9X. And he is left with 40% of 0.9X which is 72. Thus 0.4*0.9*X= 72 and this gives X as 200.

0.4*0.9*X=72
X=72*(1/0.4)*(1/0.9)
X=72*(10/4)*(10/9)
X=8*(10/4)*10 ----- [72/9=8]
X=2*10*10 ---------- [8/4=2]
X=200 Hope this will clear your confusion

Focus on the coloured sentence. He spends 60% which is unknown, the remaining amount will be 40% which is given as 72.

In other way:

Actual amount=X
Spends= 10% X
Remains=90% X

If he wants to spend more money then he will do so from 90% because 10% is already spent by him. Now,

Actual amount= 90% of X or 0.9X
Spends= 60%
Remains= 40%

This remaining percent is what given in the statement as 72. Therefore, 0.4*0.9*X=72

The saari cost Rs.90 more than the handbag and the saari and handbag together cost Rs.120 more than the pair of shoes. How much did she pay for each item?

Hand Bag=Rs. 20
Shoes=Rs. 10
