President Musharraf:a breif account
President of Pakistan and ex-Army General has announced his resignation in a televised address on August 18, 2008 after a long nine years rule. He done this in the wake of a looming crisis of his impeachment process. During different meetings of ruling coalition they stressed over his resignation and a detailed charge sheet was prepared including allegations of misconduct, financial irregularities, violation of Constitution and Law and 'Criminal acts' that could lead to an open trial. Provincial Assemblies had already passed resolutions asking either to take vote of confidence or give resignation.
This resignation has been warmly welcomed all around the country. People expressed their joys and yelled they have got rid of inflation, crisis in which country has been dumped since a couple of yeas ago and now that they would run to progress. Reliogious and lawyer comminity took a sigh of relief , got out of their houses and moved in streets with joy.
Let's look towards those events which brought such a critical situation for the country's President. Year of 2007 proved very unfortunate for President Musharraf , when the first blow to his popularity was the suspension of Cheif Justice Iftikhar M. Chaudry on March 09, 2007. The speculations among the general public were the steps taken by Cheif Justice against the misconducts of government like the detention of civilians by secret agencies and privatization of steel Mills Karachi. Consequently, killings of innocents in Karachi and Lal Mosque on May 12 and July 10 further deteriorated Musharraf's popularity. To add insult to injury mass media further exploiited the situation and presented a compelete picture of events going all around. Lawyers had already started their struggle for the restoration of CJ. They moved about the country , held conferences and public addresses , and won the sympathies of public more than expected. Polictical parties activated and their core leaders expressed their reservations in different interviews and fully utilized the situation. All this situation turned into a compelte crisis known as Judicial crisis in Pakistan. After restoration by Supreme Court Judiciary was again sacked by imposition of emergency and negation of more than sixty judges to take oath, which reinvoked and boosted lawyer struggle turning it into a lawyer Movement. This opened a severe criticism of people and Political parties backed by media channels and drawn public hopes towards exiled political leaders as the General Eections were nearby.
If we minus the period of 2007 from Musharraf's regime, his rule was not a bad experience except the blame of dictatorship.Nothing was severely done wrong, wheras Musharraf also enjoyed some popularity among the masses. he had full support of Army and a weak democratic process was going its way. Additionally he enoyed U.S support over " War against Terrorism" but perhaps these are his own intentional blunders or he was misleaded by some elements, in a nutshell, his regime may be counted as a worst one, which put the country into a political, Judicial, later on economical crisis ( external factors may be there).
