Fall from 24th Floor

( I have put an effort to translate a column of Javed Chaudhry. Please comment )


Had a stranger not moved ahead and destroyed his painting, he would have fallen from the 24th floor and died. Most of the times we become gloomy on our our hard work remaining unfruitful. After facing failures despite our several efforts, we complain of our bad luck.


1. A lady from Lahore made me a phone call a few days ago, " Why Allah Almighty takes the lives of young people? " Her voice was echoing her grief and pain. Her young brother had died in an accident on Motorway. This man was pious, hard-working, upright and educated also. While coming back from the factory, his car collided with a truck and turned upside down. He died right at the place. This incided deeply shocked the entire family.
I had no words to console her.

2. A friend of mine is very honest, industrious and determined. But his business absolutely collapsed last year. Now he is a penniless man. He is also finding out the reason of annihilation but in vain.


3. A man in Rawalpindi had been blessed by a male heir after seven daughters. He was overjoyed but his son fell into manhole and expired. The father of the child asked me, " What was our fault ? Had Allah planned to snatch the child from us, why did he granted us the happiness for such limited time? I was again speechless.


4. I personally know about a student who is a genius. He burns midnight oil in the true sense. His teachers are ready to swear about his intelligence and wit. He takes his exams well also but he could never topped. His friends and relatives remain surprised always.

5. Take the example of flood in August last year. That flood destroyed the fields, houses, factories and shops of several people.People would have spent decades on building their assets. They must be asking, " Why the forces of Nature did the worst with us?'



This question must have popped up in the mind of the artist who completed his masterpiese standing on the 24th floor in a year long time. When, the masterpiese got completed, he started moving while taking backward steps. He was so lost in the beauty and mesmerizing effect of his creation that he forgot that he was standing on a platform situated at the 24th floor. The platform had no hindrance at right, left and at the back. He was slowly stepping backwards. Several people were standing on the ground. While moving towards back, he reached the edge of the platform. He was about to take another backward step and fallen down from the 24th floor. The whole crowd was holding its breath. People want to inform him of danger. But they were afraid that he might get disturbed by the voice and he might take another step. The country will lose a great artist and the pride of the nation. The artist was standing a step away from his death and watching his painting. Suddenly a man stepped on the platform, picked a big brush, soaked it in paint and stroked mercilessly on the delicate painting. This man destroyed the painting in a few seconds. The painter turned out to be absolutely furious. He ran towards his painting. The man ran away. The painter chased him. Both reached the ground. The stranger hid himself in the huge crowd. The painter kept on searching for him, running madly. At last the painter sat on the footpath and wept bitterly with a flood of tears.



The people gathered around him and told him that the man you are considering to be your enemy is your biggest benefactor. He has saved your life. People clarified him the whole situation. People told him that had the stranger not stroked harshly on his painting, he would not have run after him and had lost his life.The painter looked towards his ruined painting and thanked God. He thought that he could paint several such paintings but he could never get back his lost life.





We are all just like that painter. At times, we are standing on that last step. We are just a step away from our death, our destruction, our downfall. A step taken and we are finished. At that time, somebody comes and start ruining our painting. He burns our efforts of several years into ashes. After losing our valueables, we feel enraged against Nature and calls it merciless. We consider ourselves the most unlucky person at that time. As a matter of fact, those losses and failures are temporary. Just like that painter, they prevent us from taking that last step and save us from irreparable losses.



Sometimes these accidents, losses and failures also change the tracks of ours and of our families. An acquaintance of mine expired. When he was alive, all the family members used to quarrell with one another. He had three lazy, idle and irresponsible sons. The father used to earn and the whole family was dependent upon him. He died. The structure of the family entirely changed. They started taking care of each other. The two elder sond started working and progressed by leaps and bounds. The youngest focused toward his studies and moved ahead speedily. The widow who was a housewife during her husband's lifetime also joined her sons in the factory and after a few years, she became a bussinesswoman. The man was the nucleus of the family but his absence revolutionized the lives of so many people.



I myself was a science student. I used to cram my books for hours and hours but failed in F.Sc. Finding no other choice, joined Arts group and started securing position. Then I entered a Law college to do L.L.B but failed in 1st year. That failure pushed me to join journalism. I did my Masters in Jounalism with first position in the university. I started my job in a newspaper, kept on facing failures in its different fields till I entered into Column- writing and got fully settled into it.



When I look back towards my life, this idea comes to my mind several times that I was standing on the last step like that painter several times in my life. Had my painting not being destroyed, I would have fallen from 24th floor. My failures dragged me and pushed me into column writing which was my real field. Had I not learnt lesson from my previous failures or kept hitting those fields which were not suitable for me, what would have happened with me? Certainly I would be sick mentally as well as physically. But Allah Almighty kept on ruining my paintings till I left that high but dangerous platform.



The problems, hurdles and obstacles of life are actually the sunshine which sweetens the mango of life. Without them, the watermelon of life does not turn into brilliant red from inside. Without them our muscles do not gain energy and motivation. But mostly we lose hope after failure and complain against Nature who is actually saving us from dangerous heights. The paintings of our plans and our efforts are ruining, therefore, we are standing on the ground, we are alive and moving ahead. :-)

javed chuadary is 101% right.We humans can never understand the way of ALLAH.He is the most merciful and beneficent.Whenever something bad happens to us we tend to be negative but in a long run,after so many years when we look back that turning point really felt like a blessing.

We all should have faith that ALLAH can never ever do anything wrong to us.

Translation is absolutely correct but i must appreciate Javed chudhary for writing this superb column. I think this is the lesson for those candidates who fail to secure good positions in CSS. We should not call anyone unlucky because Allah Almighty is Supreme and whatever HE does, HE Knows better. HE does good for everyone.
