I think both have their own places, and their importance cannot be ignored. But, I think, in the end, you have to rely on blood. But, we can find plathora of examples in which, friends proved to be more precious and sincere. So, under the present snario, the proverb does not go 100%

Farrah has rightly said that we cannot compare our friends with relatives yet to an extent i would say friends are much better than others except mother and father.

there is no replacement to blood in no any case... if it's thicker it is..
someone says that a true real friend may be better, then dear why do u forget a blood relation has to be true n real as well.. a true blood relative can never see other relative in pain because pain feels at both ends where blood circulates..

In every family, each person is a leader and he who has to be separate one day from his family.

Love is not what we feel or show rather love is what we practice.
You might have noticed people remain more familiar with friends than their siblings.
The secrets you used to share with your good friends, cannot be shared with your relatives.
You friends would not provoke you much as compared to your relatives.
In blood, there is a concept of jealousy that is hardly found in friendship(I am talking about real friendship not fake).
Thus,in my opinion, true friendship is better than relatives.

Neither i am here to defend true friendship nor against relatives.
What compels me to write all this,is my personal experience.
Who went against our prophets, their friends or relatives?
Who beat the drums of conspiracy against many prominent rulers of history, friends or relatives?

Partially agree with Waqar Abro, as his inclination is totally towards Friendship. Well, it does carry weight to some extent.
Let me give him more weight.
You have mother, father, sister, brother, etc. etc. The most important thing in any kind of relation is "sharing" and to share, you need a "Friend" within that relation i.e. mother, father, sister, brother, etc. "Mohabbat" k ilawa har jaga dost hi kaam aya

blood is family ...
so see !
relatives forms family and family form institutions and these form nation.family profile is a nation profile.it seem profane when one said friend profile is nation profile.so relation bounds can`T be broken.modern world made us so isolated we prefer friends as ties lose.you point out one aspect.i what describe it is capab;e of further expansion.

I will go with Blood is thicker than water.....
Its my personal experience if we compare both relatives and friends...you will find blood relatives at your side when you extremely needed them...if you dont have good terms in some point of time with your kins..there is always a possibility that they will stand by your side when you need them..but in case of friend it depends upon person to person...if the person who is your friend is good by his nature than he will be there for you but in other case he will not...A friend in need is not because of your friendship terms with him or her but it is because the person by nature is good....

Disagree with this point.
Justify in which sense, the term nation has been used which has no sense here.
2.Friend profile a nation profile(philosophy ko choren,hit the topic)
3.There is no role of modern world, its highly concerned with human nature.
take a look at history, you will happen to learn what, has been written in my previous post.
