Cousin Marriages
Salam guyz...
Cousin marriages are very popular in Pakistan. Several studies from Punjab estimate the prevalence of consanguineous marriages (defined as marriages between blood relatives) at about 50%. There are distinct cultural advantages in marrying a close relative. In a culture where most marriages are arranged, and there is little chance to interact with members of the opposite sex, for both partners, there is the comfort of familiarity. From the boy's (literal translation of larka) parents, there is the hope that since the daughter-in-law is a bhanji/bhatijee, there will not be much resentment or conflict with them. For the girl's family, there is the reassurance that their child is unlikely to be mistreated - an extremely important consideration in a country where abuse of women is common. In some instances, there are economic considerations - property remains within the family. Cousin marriages, therefore, make sense in many ways. However, from a population genetic standpoint, they may not be a prudent choice. Sexual reproduction was designed for a reason - to produce genetic mixing and diversity - as opposed to asexual reproduction practiced by bacteria and amebae who simply divide themselves to produce identical daughter clones. Assalam Alaikum,
Mr. Memon, this member brings a good point because in Western countries the cousin marriages are considered taboo. They are considered to be incestuous. Thanks. |

my knowledge in this regard...
Islam discourages such marriages (from Father's bloodline especially). Also, scientific research says that every 1 child in 5000 is born abnormal. I have also witnessed examples of this.

Salaam,
Mr. Babban.. I am being mistaken. I never meant to criticize Sir Bensonandh, I simply wanted to know the rationale. Because the stuff was posted in Amusement forum twice. I agree with you. Such type of marriages are strictly prohibited in Hinduism also, not sure if discouraged in Islam. Though they are not prohibited. Science does not recommend such marriages. But the elders in my family say that such marriages are always stable. Life partners, from the family, are comparatively long lasting. By this they mean that they are with you at the times of hardships. (The original writer of the article is indeed correct at his remarks) If my post was offensive... I apologize for the inconvenience caused. Regards, Adil Memon

Assalam Alaikum,
Brother your posts are never offensive and you do not have to apologize for anything. But I do agree that this topic should have been brought in Discussion, and not in GUP SHUP. Thanks. |
